The Galapagos Islands are 600 miles west of South America in the middle of the Pacific Ocean and are a possession of Ecuador. It is one of the most remote places in the world.

The lunch will be held in the only city on the islands of San Cristobal. The Galapagos Islands are where Charles Darwin developed his Theory of Evolution back in 1835 courtesy of the HMS Beagle. The islands are overrun with marine iguanas (Amblyrhnchus Cristatus).

Quito, the capital of Ecuador, is high in South America’s Andes mountains at 8,000 feet and dead on the equator. The Old Town was built by the Conquistadors on the ruins of an Inca city. It has since become a key stopover for illegal immigrants from China. Those with heart conditions should not attend.

The lunch will be held at one of Earnest Hemingway’s favorite bars in Old Havana. US Relations with Cuba have run hot and cold over the years and now it is possible for me to make this trip so I thought I’d jump at the chance.

Only bring cash in $1 denominations as credit cards are not accepted in Fidel Castro’s worker paradise and there is no change. Nor is there any cell phone coverage. And drink anything but bottled water on pain of death. And bring your own toilet paper and toilet seat as none are available in public restrooms.

Hopefully, the Cuban Air Force won’t shoot me down on the way to Havana as they have done with others in the past as I will be flying my own plane. But if I am, don’t worry. I got an “A” in Ditching at Sea in flight school and am bringing a friend with two very ample flotation devices.

We should make quite an interesting threesome. General Mattis will also be providing some fascinating personal insights during his time in the White House.
