There are always many unintended consequences to any Fed move, such as the 50-basis point interest rate cut on September 18. This time, a big one is that China would match and then exceed our own central bank’s move with a blockbuster stimulus package of their own. China has finally reached the “whatever it takes” moment, and the programs are squarely aimed at stimulating consumption.
You will hear from the talking heads on TV that the package is inadequate, a weak effort, an hour late, and a Yuan short, and will fail. But China has massive resources and will follow up with a second, larger package if they need to.
For a start, they own $860 billion worth of our US Treasury bonds, more than any foreign country, and unimaginable amounts of rapidly appreciating gold (GLD), which they have been accumulating since it was $1,020 an ounce (it is now $2,600).
China really pulled out all the stops on this one. The People's Bank of China on Wednesday cut its medium-term lending facility -- the interest for one-year loans to financial institutions -- from 2.3% to 2.0%, the lowest since 2020. The rate cuts are going to bring $140 billion in new lending.
They reduced deposits for new investment property purchases to 10% in a move clearly aimed at resuscitating their moribund real estate market. For the first time ever, they are handing out cash payments to poor people. It is the most stimulus since Covid.
China is not to be taken lightly.
Certainly, the stock market is buying it….at least for now. The main China ETF, the (FXI) had its best week in history, up 20%. Most of this was short covering. The short interest in the leading Chinese stocks like Alibaba (BABA), Baidu (BIDU), and Tencent Music Holdings (TNE) was running close to an eye-popping 50%.
So, why bother with a country half the size of our own, where the writing looks like chicken scratching, and the food has way too much MSG? Because the Middle Kingdom is the largest buyer of almost everything, including oil (USO), coal (BTU), natural gas (UNG), corn (CORN), wheat (WEAT), and soybeans (SOYB), most of which is supplied by the United States.
So, have I been burying you with China-oriented trade alerts this week? No, not really. First of all, I never buy on top of a 20% move in five days. It just goes against my bargain-hunting character. More importantly, the best China plays are here in the US. You can start with all of the ticker symbols I listed above.
There are also quite a few indirect China plays available in the West. Notice that the casinos Las Vegas Sands (LVS) and Wynn Resorts (WYNN) are up 20% across the board. The luxury stocks like LVMH Moet Hennessy (LVUY) and Hermes International (HESAF) also saw monster moves.
Dare I say it? Buy China on dips, especially blue-chip names like Alibaba (BABA) and Baidu (BIDU). If this Beijing stimulus fails, they’ll probably follow up with another one.
And what do newly enriched Chinese consumers do? They buy more gold. In fact, the gold story keeps getting better the higher it goes.
Another gold positive is the US National Debt, now at $35 trillion. Whichever candidate wins the presidential election, the national debt will keep rising, either by $500 billion a year or $2.5 trillion. Foreigners seem more worried about our debt than we are and are finding any non-dollar asset more attractive by the day. Gold is at the very top of that list.
It turns out that in a world of falling interest rates, a declining dollar, and fading faith in financial institutions, quite a few Americans like gold as well. Hey, Costco (CSCO) is selling it. How bad can it be?
So far in September, we are up by a spectacular +9.54%. My 2024 year-to-date performance is at +44.23%.The S&P 500 (SPY) is up +20.33%so far in 2024. My trailing one-year return reached +62.87%. That brings my 16-year total return to +720.86%.My average annualized return has recovered to +52.47%.
Last week was mostly about running existing successful long positions. Those would include (CCJ), (NEM), (TLT), (TSLA), and (DHI). I have one short position in (TLT).
I did add a (TLT) call spread, taking advantage of a rapid $4 dip. I also increased my Tesla (TSLA) long to a double, believing that the stock will keep running into the October 10 Robotaxi announcement.
Some 63 of my 75 round trips, or 90%, were profitable in 2023. Some 59 of 77 trades have been profitable so far in 2024, and several of those losses were really break-even. That is a success rate of +76.62%.
Try beating that anywhere.
Are Markets Melting Up? So thinks my friend Ed Yardeni. The latest policy decision lifted the odds of an “outright melt-up” in equity prices — like during the dot-com bubble when the (SPY) roared 220% from 1995 to the end of the century — to 30% from 20%. Another 50-basis point rate cut might do it. One can only hope.
What Happens When Gold Hits $3,000? It then moves on to $4,400 an ounce. Chinese savers will still have nowhere else to go. The real estate market is still dead, Chinese stocks are moribund, and they don’t trust their own currency. Keep buying (GLD), (NEM), and (GOLD) on dips.
The Core Personal Consumption Expenditures Price Index Falls, to a 2.2% annual rate, much lower than expected. The Federal Reserve’s preferred gauge to measure underlying inflation,rose 0.1% for the month, putting the 12-month inflation rate at 2.2%. Excluding food and energy, core PCE rose 0.1% in August and was up 2.7% from a year ago. The all-items inflation gauge was below Wall Street estimates and the lowest since early 2021.
American China Plays Roar, like commodities plays Freeport McMoRan (FCX), the Copper ETF, COPX), Peabody Energy (BTU), and the Platinum ETF. Indirect plays like the casinos Las Vegas Sands (LVS) and Wynn Resorts (WYNN). Dare I say it? Buy China on dips, like Alibaba (BABA) and Baidu (BIDU). If this Beijing stimulus fails, they’ll probably follow up with another one. Silver is on a Roll, and is finally outperforming gold, as it has historically done. Silver just hit its highest price in more than a decade, and growing demand and falling interest rates mean it could have more room to run.
On Thursday, silver hit $32.43 an ounce, its highest price since 2012. The metal is up 35% so far this year. That beats a 30% rally for gold, which has been trading at all-time highs. Silver is much more sensitive to an industrial recovery than gold. Buy (SLV), (AGQ), (SIL), and (WPM) on dips. Oil Gets Crushed on Saudi Output Burst. After a brief bounce back last week, it looks like oil is in a bearish pattern now that will be hard to break for the next few months. OPEC and its allies have been holding at least 5 million barrels of daily output off the market to prop prices, but they are expected to start bringing back production soon. Saudi Arabia, the strongest member of OPEC in that it has the most capacity to pump oil, is no longer willing to hold back production to try to push the price up to $100 a barrel.
US GDP Revised up to 5.5% Growth, since the second quarter of 2020, when the pandemic began through 2023. It was spurred mainly by bigger consumer-driven growth fueled by robust incomes. The revised figure is compared with a previously published 5.1% advance. You can’t beat America. Electrification is the Latest Hot Investment Theme, seeking to cash in on AI demands on the power grid. Issuer Global X last week filed for its U.S. Electrification ETF, which would track an index of conventional companies in the sector, as well as those involved in alternative or cleaner energy sources — such as wind and solar — and grid infrastructure firms. Fund firm Tema also recently submitted paperwork for an ETF that would invest in companies “tied to global electrification.” These funds could become big winners. US Homes Plunge, down 4.7% in August. Buyers are clearly remaining patient amid steadily declining mortgage rates. New single-family home sales decreased last month to an annualized rate of 716,000 after rising at the fastest pace since early 2022. The median sales price, in the meantime, decreased by 4.6% from a year earlier to $420,600. That marked the seventh straight month of annual price declines, extending what was already the longest streak since 2009 Home Mortgage Rates are in Free Fall, with the 30-year fixed at 6.08% and adjustable well into the fives. Refi activity is also exploding. Expect a real estate boom to ensue. Can Tesla Reach $300? With (TSLA) possibly looking at a great quarter in China, Wall Street pros are rushing to increase their outlooks for the electric vehicle maker’s quarterly sales. At least four analysts have boosted their estimates for Tesla’s third-quarter delivery numbers, which are due next week. All point to signs that sales are starting to pick up in China, a key area for Tesla and a major market for electric cars globally. Vistra Tops Nvidia, as the top S&P 500 stock this year. Vistra is a utility company based in Irving, Tex. that just so happens to be the second-largest owner of independent nuclear plants after buying three nuclear plants in Pennsylvania last year, and these days nuclear power is all the rage. Buy (VST) on dips.
My Ten-Year View
When we come out the other side of the recession, we will be perfectly poised to launch into my new American Golden Age, or the next Roaring Twenties. The economy decarbonizing and technology hyper accelerating, creating enormous investment opportunities. The Dow Average will rise by 600% to 240,000 or more in the coming decade. The new America will be far more efficient and profitable than the old.
Dow 240,000 here we come!

On Wednesday, October 2 at 7:30 PM, ADP Employment Change is printed.
On Thursday, October 3 at 8:30 AM, the Weekly Jobless Claims are announced. We also get the ISM Services PMI.
On Friday, October 4 at 8:30 AM, we get the September Nonfarm Payroll Report. At 2:00 PM, the Baker Hughes Rig Count is printed.
As for me, I am often told that I am the most interesting man people ever met, sometimes daily. I had the good fortune to know someone far more interesting than myself.
When I was 14, I decided to start earning merit badges if I was ever going to become an Eagle Scout. I decided to begin with an easy one, Reading Merit Badge, where you only had to read four books and write one review. I loved reading, so “piece of cake”, I thought.
I was directed to Kent Cullers, a high school kid who had been blind since birth. During the late 1940s, the medical community thought it would be a great idea to give newborns pure oxygen. It was months before it was discovered that the procedure caused the clouding of corneas and total blindness in infants.
Kent was one of these kids.
It turned out that everyone in the troop already had Reading Merit Badge and that Kent had exhausted our supply of readers. Fresh meat was needed.
So, I rode my bicycle over to Kent’s house and started reading. It was all science fiction. America’s Space Program ignited a science fiction boom during the early 1960s and writers like Isaac Asimov, Jules Verne, Arthur C. Clark, and H.G. Wells were in huge demand. Star Trek came out the following year, in 1966. That was the year I became an Eagle Scout.
It only took a week for me to blow through the first four books. In the end, I read hundreds of books to Kent. Kent didn’t just listen to me read. He explained the implications of what I was reading (got to watch out for those non-carbon-based life forms).
Having listened to thousands of books on the subject Kent gave me a first class education and I credit him with moving me towards a career in science. Kent is also the reason why I got an 800 SAT score in Math.
When we got tired of reading, we played around with Kent’s radio. His dad was a physicist and had bought him a state-of-the-art high-powered short-wave radio. I always found Kent’s house from the 50 foot tall radio antenna.
That led to another merit badge, one for Radio, where I had to transmit in Morse Code at five words a minute. Kent could do 50. On the badge below the Morse Code says “BSA.” In those days, when you made a new contact, you traded addresses and sent each other postcards.
Kent had postcards with colorful call signs from more than 100 countries plastered all over his wall. One of our regular correspondents was the president of the Palo Alto High School Radio Club, Steve Wozniak, who later went on to co-found Apple (AAPL) with Steve Jobs.
It was a sad day in 1999 when the US Navy retired the Morse Code and replaced it with satellites and digital communication far faster than any human could send. However, it is still used as beacon identifiers at US airfields.
Kent’s great ambition was to become an astronomer. I asked how he would become an astronomer when he couldn’t see anything. He responded that Galileo, the inventor of the telescope, was blind in his later years.
I replied, “Good point”.
Kent went on to get a PhD in Physics from UC Berkeley, no mean accomplishment even for sighted people. He lobbied heavily for the creation of SETI, or the Search for Extra-Terrestrial Intelligence, once an arm of NASA.He became its first director in 1985 and worked there for 20 years.
In the 1987 movie Contact written by Carl Sagan and starring Jodie Foster, the movie was filmed at the Very Large Array in western New Mexico. The algorithms Kent developed there are still in widespread use today. I’ve never been there because I never had the time to drive an hour and a half down a dirt road.
Out here in the West, aliens have been a big deal, ever since that weather balloon crashed in Roswell, New Mexico in 1947. In fact, it was a spy balloon meant to overfly and photograph Russia, but it blew back on the US, thus its top secret status.
When people learn I used to work at Area 51, I am constantly asked if I have seen any spaceships. The road there, Nevada State Route 375, is called the Extra Terrestrial Highway. Who says we don’t have a sense of humor in Nevada?
After devoting his entire life to searching, Kent gave me the inside story on searching for aliens. We will never meet them but we will talk to them. That’s because the acceleration needed to get to a high enough speed to reach outer space would tear apart a human body. On the other hand, radio waves travel effortlessly at the speed of light.
Sadly, Kent passed away in 2021 at the age of 72. Kent, ever the optimist, had his body cryogenically frozen in Hawaii where he will remain until the technology evolves to wake him up. Minor planet 35056 Cullers is named in his honor.
There are no movies being made about my life…. yet. But there are a couple of scripts out there under development.

Q: I was a little surprised that you closed the (TLT) $79-$82 vertical bull call spread so early. Why not wait longer?
A: I took an 84% profit in only four trading days and skipped the last 16% which I would have had to wait another month to get. I was much better off putting on another position and making another 100%. In this kind of market, you want to take quick profits and then roll them into new positions as fast as you can. That’s where you make the big money, and that's what we’ve been doing. You have to strike when the iron is hot.
Q: November’s results are phenomenal!
A: Yes they are, 55 years of practice makes it easy.
Q: Thoughts on Advanced Micro Devices (AMD)?
A: It’s going higher. I think the whole semiconductor sector is the leading sector in the market; we have seen that with these gigantic 30-40% moves in the semis. That will continue, and then it will spread out to the rest of big tech (which it’s already done), and eventually, we get to the industrials and commodities in the second half of 2024 when the big economic growth returns. So that is the script for the coming year.
Q: Will the upcoming Fed interest rate cuts crash the dollar, and which emerging currency should I buy?
A: Yes and yes. It will crush the dollar–we could be entering a new decade of a falling U.S. dollar. The number one currency to buy is the Australian dollar (FXA). It has the most leverage for a global economic recovery. And you can see when we get to the currency section of today’s webinar that the currencies are already starting to move. Whatever currency has falling interest rates is always the weakest, and the U.S. dollar is about to become just that.
Q: What’s the deal with casino stocks lately like Wynn Resorts (WYNN) and MGM Resorts International (MGM)?
A: These companies took on massive amounts of debt during the pandemic to stay in business, so they are now highly sensitive to interest rates. If you look at the collapse of these stocks in the last four months, it is almost perfectly in sync with rising interest rates, and that’s why the stocks performed so poorly. By the way, the same is true for all the cruise companies like Royal Caribbean (RCL), and Carnival (CCL). The flip side of that is when interest rates start to go down these stocks do great, and they are falling interest rate plays, so you probably should be buying the casinos, the cruise lines, and the hotel stocks here because they are all suffering from massive debt loads, the cost of which is about to decline sharply.
Q: Should we roll up the expiration of LEAPS to 2026?
A: Probably not a bad idea, because we may get weakness in commodities for the next several months before we enter a massive new bull market. If you have the 2025, you’ll probably make money on that, but to be ultra-safe you could roll it forward to 2026. We know there’s a global copper shortage developing because of EVs, but right now EV sales are slow, so you don’t want to be piling onto the leverage plays on that too soon. That’s also why I am not in Tesla (TSLA) for the Moment.
Q: What will happen if the Fed cuts interest rates and there’s no recession? Won’t prices of everything from houses to butter go wild?
A: They won’t go wild, but they will go up at a 2% inflation rate, which is what the Fed wants. And house prices, which have been flat for the last year, will rise. And they may rise greater than the inflation rate of 2%; they may rise more like 5%. Falling interest rates mean falling mortgages; we’ve already seen mortgage rates drop from 8 to 7.4%. It's one of the sharpest drops in history, and more drops bring more first-time home buyers into the market. And don’t forget that the Fed could also raise interest rates down the road. If the economy gets too hot again, they may raise again, but I think we’ll see a lot of cuts first.
Q: Do you think financial stocks will go up or fall with potential rate decreases?
A: Banks always go up during falling interest rates because their cost of funds goes down and the default rate on their loans also goes down, so they get a hockey stick effect on earnings; that’s why you’re seeing such monster moves in stocks like JP Morgan (JPM) and the brokers (SCHW) as well as the money managers like BlackRock (BLK).
Q: Does the bull market keep going since unemployment still hasn’t made a dent, meaning consumers are fueling the rise in stocks?
A: Yes, consumer spending is still doing well. People seem to be getting the money from somewhere and it seems to be rising wages. But I expect wage gains to drop by half; people will still get wage increases, but not the peak levels that the UAW got in their deal with Detroit. Is a Goldilocks economy that is setting up, and the economy keeps growing We never do get a recession, and all risk assets rise as a result. That is the outlook!
Q: Bullish on Berkshire Hathaway (BRK/B)?
A: I completely agree, it’s one of the best-run companies in the world. 93-year-old Warren Buffet and 99-year-old Charlie Munger have delivered double the performance of the S&P 500 over the last three years.
Q: When does the IPO market come back to life, and which industries will benefit the most?
A: AI and Technology will benefit the most. There are several AI companies in the wings waiting to go public, and they will be the first out the door with the highest multiples, and then the IPO business will broaden out from there.
Q: Will a worsening Chinese property market blow up the U.S. Stock rally or is it just a fake risk I shouldn’t worry about?
A: The Chinese (FXI) real estate market is detached from the global economy. There is no international implication, and it’s also typical of emerging markets to overbuild and then have a financial collapse. Nobody I know has suffered anything in China in a long time, and if anything, they’re liquidating what little they have left. It doesn’t affect us at all. It’s interesting reading about it in the newspapers, and that’s about it.
Q: What are some stocks we should consider day trading these days?
A: None. Most people who try day trading lose money doing it; some people pull it off but they have many years of experience. Algorithms from big brokers have essentially taken over the day trading business with high-frequency trading. You do better on a one-month view, which I do on my front-month options. Most 2023 Stock Gains Happened in only eight days, up some 14% since January 1, and only seven stocks accounted for most of the increase. If you are a day trader, you most likely missed all of this because most of the moves were on gap openings.
Q: Home builders (XHB) have just had a great run, is this an area too short?
A: “Short” is a term you need to remove from your language! You don’t want to short a big bull move like this. If anything, wait until May when the summer seasonals start to favor short positions, and it depends on how high the market runs up until then. Don’t ever think about shorting the very beginning of a new bull market in stocks–not for housing, not for anything! And the outlook for housing over the long term looks fantastic; there’s still an overwhelming supply and demand in favor of the home builders. Some 85 million new Millennials need to buy first-time homes.

2023 Kherson Ukraine – Ha Ha Missed Me! It was a dud.
Last summer, I stayed at an Airbnb in Long Beach, CA in order to pick up my kids from the Boy Scout Camp on Catalina Island. It was billed as a vintage 1920s residence with all the period finishes, was two blocks from the beach, and was a short drive to the Cataline ferry, so it seemed like the ideal place.
But the second I walked into the place I was overcome by a ghostly Twilight Zone type feeling. Everything seemed strangely familiar. What really freaked me out was that the grill on the electric wall heater exactly matched the scar on my sister’s hand. Even though the place was 100 years old, I had been here before.
When I returned home, I headed straight for a voluminous genealogy file that I maintained. After an hour of going through all the family records, I hit paydirt. The address of the Airbnb was listed as the home address of my grandmother when she was married in 1925.
When the pandemic hit in February 2020, I figured Airbnb (ABNB) was toast. Global travel had ground to a halt, and competitors like Wynn Resorts (WYNN) and Hyatt Hotels (H) saw their share prices plunge to near zero.
Instead, the opposite happened.
While the big hotels continue to roast in purgatory, Airbnb catapulted to a new golden age, and how they did it was amazing.
They turned all travel local. Instead of recommending that I visit Cairo, Tokyo, or Rio de Janeiro, they suggested Carmel, Monterey, or Mendocino, all destinations within driving distance.
It worked spectacularly well, and the company is now moving from strength to strength. Since the pandemic bottom, the shares have rocketed from $69 to $210.
My neighborhood in Incline Village, NV was almost always deserted outside of holidays. Now it is packed with Airbnber’s awkwardly moving in every Friday only to flee on Sunday.
How would you like to get an 80% discount on all of your luxury hotel accommodations?
During my recent trip to Dubrovnik in Croatia, I rented an 800-square-foot, two-bedroom, two-bath home inside the city walls for $300 a night.
A single, cramped 150-square-foot room in the nearest five-star hotel was $600 night.
All that was missing was room service, a handout for a big tip, and a surly attitude at the front desk.
Sounds like a massive, game-changing disruption to me.

The big question for you and me is: Will the valuation soar tenfold from the current $106 billion to $1 trillion?
Is (ABNB) your next ten bagger?
To answer that question, I spent six weeks traveling around the world as an Airbnb customer. This enabled me to understand their business model, their strengths and weaknesses, and analyze their long-term potential.
As a customer, the value you receive is nothing less than amazing.
I have been a five-star hotel guest for most of my life, with someone else picking up the tab much of the time (thank you Morgan Stanley!), so I have a pretty good idea on the true value of accommodations.
What you get from Airbnb is nothing less than spectacular. You get three or four times the floor space for one-third the price. That’s a disruption factor of 7:1.
The standards are often five-star and at the top end, depending on how much you spend. I found I could often get an entire three-bedroom house for the price of a single hotel room, with a better location.
Or, I could get an excellent abode in rural settings, where none other was to be had, whatsoever.
That’s a big deal for someone like me who spends so much of the year on the road.
You also get a new best friend in every city you visit.
On most occasions, the host greeted me on the doorsteps with the keys, and then introduced me to the mysteries of European kitchen appliances, heating, and air conditioning.
Pre-stocking the refrigerator with fresh milk, coffee, tea, and jam seems to be a tradition the hosts pick up in their Airbnb orientation course.
One in Waterford, Ireland even left me a bottle of wine, plenty of beer, and a frozen pizza. She read my mind. She then took me on a one-hour tour of their city, divulging secrets about their favorite restaurants, city sights, and nightspots. Everyone proved golden. Thanks, Mary!
After you check out, Airbnb asks you to review the accommodation. These can be incredibly valuable in deciding your next pick.
I had one near miss with what I thought was a great deal in London, until I read, “The entire place reeks of Indian cooking.” Having caught amoebic dysentery in India once Indian cooking does not exactly bring back fond memories.
Similarly, the hosts rate you as a guest.
One hostess in Dingle, Ireland shared a story about picking up her clients from town after they got drunk and lost in the middle of the night. Then they threw up in the back of the car on the way home.
Guests forgetting to return keys is another common complaint.
Needless to say, I received top ratings from my hosts, as fixing their WIFI to boost performance became a regular and very popular habit of mine.
After my initial fabulous experience in London, I thought it might be a one-off, limited to only the largest cities. So, I started researching accommodations for my upcoming trips.
I couldn’t have been more wrong.
Just the Kona Coast on the big island of Hawaii had an incredible 300 offerings, including several bargain beachfront properties.
The center of Tokyo had over 300 listings. The historic district in Florence, Italy had a mind-blowing 351 properties. When I stayed there, six of seven floors of the building I stayed in were devoted to (ABNB) accommodations. The one full time resident was pissed and often slammed his door.

Airbnb has truly gone global.
Airbnb’s business model is almost too simple to be true, involving no more than a couple of popular applications. Call it an artful melding of Google Earth (GOOG), email, text, and PayPal (PYPL).
While no one was looking, it became the world’s largest hotel at a tiny fraction of the capital cost.
The company has 6 million hosts in 100,000 cities worldwide in 220 countries who so far have earned $150 billion, and 150 million users. The all-time number of guests is 1 billion. The company recently shut down all of its Russia listings.
That supply/demand imbalance shifts the burden of the cost to the renters, who usually have to fork out a 12% fee, plus the cost of the cleaning service.
Hosts only pay 3% to process the credit card fees for the payment.
To say that Airbnb has created controversy would be a huge understatement.
For a start, it has emerged as a major challenge to the hotel industry, which is still stuck with a 20th century business model. There’s no way hotels can compete on price.
One Airbnb “super host” in Manhattan managed 200 apartments, essentially, creating out of scratch, a medium-sized virtual “hotel” until the city caught on to them.
Taxes are another matter.
Some municipalities require hosts to pay levies of up to 20%, while others demand quarterly tax filings and withholding taxes. That is, if tax collectors can find them.
Airbnb may be the largest new source of tax evasion today.
In cities where housing is in short supply, Airbnb is seen as crowding out local residents. After all, an owner can make far more money subletting their residence nightly than with a long-term lease.
Several owners told me that Airbnb covered their entire mortgage and housing cost for the year while paying off the mortgage at the same time.
Owners in the primmest of areas, like mid-town Manhattan off of Central Park, or the old city center in Dubrovnik rent, their homes out as much as 180 days a year.
It is doing nothing less than changing lives.
That has forced local governments to clamp down.
San Francisco has severe, iron-clad planning and zoning restrictions that only allow 2,000 new residences a year to come on the market.
It is cracking down on Airbnb, as well as other home-sharing apps like FlipKey, VRBO, and HomeAway, by forcing hosts to register with the city or face brutal $1,000 a day fine.
Ratting out your neighbor as an off-the-grid Airbnb member has become a new cottage industry in the City of the Bay.
Airbnb is fighting back with multiple lawsuits, citing the federal Communications Decency Act, the Stored Communications Act, and the First Amendment covering the freedom of speech.
It is a safe bet that a $91 billion company can spend more on legal fees than a city the size of San Francisco.
The company has also become the largest contributor in San Francisco’s local elections. In 2015, it fought a successful campaign against Proposition “F”, meant to place severe restrictions on their services.
An Airbnb stayover is not without its problems.
The burden of truth in advertising is on the host, not the company, and inaccurate listings are withdrawn only after complaints.
A twenty-something-year-old guy’s idea of cleanliness may be a little lower than your own.
Long-time users learn the unspoken “code”.
“Cozy” can mean tiny, “as is” can be a dump, and “lively” can bring the drunken screaming of four-letter words all night long, especially if you are staying upstairs from a pub.
And that spectacular seaside view might come with relentlessly whining Vespa’s on the highway out front as I was once confronted with in coastal Italy. Always brings earplugs and blindfolds as backups.
Researching complaints, it seems that the worst of the abuses occur in shared accommodations. Learning new foreign cultures can be fascinating. But your new roommate may want to get to know you better than you want, especially if you are female.
In one notorious incident, a Madrid guest was raped and had to call customer service in San Francisco to get the local police to rescue her. The best way to guard against such unpleasantries is to rent the entire residence for your use only, as I do.
Another problem arises when properties are rented out for illegal purposes, such as prostitution or drug dealing. Near my San Francisco home five people were shot and killed in an illegal block party nearby in a Airbnb weekend rental that was supposed let out to a “quiet couple.”
More than once, an unsuspecting resident woke up one morning to discover they were living next door to a new bordello.
Coming out of the pandemic, my conclusion is that the travel industry is entering a hyper-growth phase. Blame the emerging middle-class Chinese, who are going to be everywhere.
The real shock came when I left Airbnb and stayed in a regular hotel. Include the fees and the cleaning charges, and the service is no longer competitive for a single-night stay. Total costs now regularly run double the posted one-night price posted on websites.
In any case, most hosts have two or three-night minimums to minimize hassle.
When I checked in at a Basel, Switzerland Five Star hotel, all I got was a set of keys and a blank stare. No great restaurant tips, no local secrets, no new best friend.

Below please find subscribers’ Q&A for the May 18 Mad Hedge Fund Trader Global Strategy Webinar broadcast from Silicon Valley.
Q: When do you see the banks returning to glory?
A: When recession fears go away, which should happen this summer. A recession will either have come and gone, or we will have confirmation by the end of summer that there is no recession in sight for the next few years at least. This will likely trigger a monster rally in the banks, which could all jump 50% from here. Obviously, Warren Buffet is putting his money where his mouth is by loading up on Citibank (C) yesterday. This would take us to new all-time highs by the end of the year. So, again, use these down-1000-point days to go cherry-picking among the generals who have been executed. If that’s not mixing metaphors, I don’t know what is!
Q: Should I listen to CNBC?
A: No, do not listen to the talking heads on TV. They are on TV because they don’t know how to make money. If they did know how to make money, they’d be locked up in a dark basement somewhere like me, grinding out millions for their firms. In fact, watching TV is the perfect money destruction machine because on down days, they bring out the uber bears, and on up days they bring up the hyper bulls. They are trying to egg you to get you to do the exact opposite of what you should be doing. They’re not interested in you making money; they’re interested in getting traffic on their websites and making money for themselves. CNBC can be highly dangerous to your financial health.
Q: Will we get stagflation?
A: No, because I think that once the year-on-year comparisons kick in—literally in a month or two—inflation will drop from the current 8.3% to down maybe 4% by the end of the year. That also is another factor in your monster second-half rally.
Q: Do you think the bounce in the market yesterday is the beginning of an upward trend or a dead cat bounce?
A: Definitely a dead cat bounce. I expect we’ll keep chopping around in the current range for the next 3, 4, and 5 months, and then we catapult into a monster year-end rally. That is a typical bottoming-type process.
Q: Is the wisdom “Go away in May” still alive or is your best bet that this year may prove different and the market goes up in the latter part of the year?
A: Actually, you should have gone away in November. That’s when all tech stocks peaked; only energy went up after that. If you’d gone away in November and said “come back in August” that would have been a good strategy because I think that’s when the year-end rally begins. If anything, May could be the bottom of the entire move.
Q: Is it time for LEAPS (Long Term Equity Anticipation Securities)?
A: Not yet—it’s too soon for LEAPS territory. You only want to do LEAPS when you are on a sustained long-term uptrend in a stock. We are nowhere near sustained anything, we are still in a bottoming phase, and could be there for months. At the end of those months is when we’ll be looking at LEAPS, where you can double your money every 6 months.
Q: Is it time to start nibbling on China stocks (FXI) now that COVID news is marginally better?
A: I’m going to avoid Chinese stocks because the American ones are so much better. You want to buy the quality at the discount, not the marginal, high-risk political footballs at a discount. And China will remain high-risk as long as they are abandoning capitalism. If you have to buy one Chinese stock, I would say Alibaba (BABA); you could get a double on that. But remember it is a high-risk trade—if the Chinese government wants to roll Jack Ma up in a carpet and kidnap him to Western Chinese re-education camp, the stock will get slaughtered. And that’s been happening increasingly with the heads of major companies in the Middle Kingdom.
Q: When this current route comes to an end, should we look to enter the market with 50% margin on stocks like Tesla (TSLA)?
A: It’s never sensible to go to 50% margin because if the stocks drop 50%, you are completely wiped out—you’ve lost everything. Plus, coming back from a loss is one thing; coming back from zero is impossible. So, I would not recommend that. You might do a safe stock like Apple (APPL), with a 2% dividend, and then at least you’re getting a double dividend. You only do the 50% margin on the safest, high dividend stocks.
Q: Amazon (AMZN) is on its way down. What is your expectation for the $3200/$3400 vertical bull call spread in January 2023?
A: I think you could make money on that. It may not be the full amount of the spread, but you’ll definitely get a big increase from current levels, because when we do get a second half rally, it will be tech-led, and Amazon has already had a horrific decline. What you might consider is rolling your strike down, taking the loss on the 3200/3400 and rolling down to like a $2,000/$2,200 in twice the size, and you’ll make your money back that way.
Q: For those of us thinking about LEAPS, how should we start to buy in—20, 30, 50% right now?
A: Well, first of all, you only do them on down days like today, when the market is down 800, and you scale in. 20% now, 20% higher or lower, and 20% again higher or lower. But you really want to be saving cash for days like this because You want to feel smarter than everybody else, and they absolutely will hit any bid on a down day, and that's where your LEAPS fills are really excellent, is on a down day like this.
Q: Can the Fed avoid another policy mistake? Because it seems that not only are they heading for high inflation, but layoffs are coming as well, and even with that I’m sure they will perform a soft landing of sorts.
A: For sure, when you take massive amounts of stimulus out of the economy, as we have in the last year, that is recessionary. In fact, the US government is close to running a balance budget right now because Biden can’t get anything through Congress other than money for Ukraine. Good for Ukraine economy, not for ours. And yes, they can do a soft landing, but has it ever been done before? No. Though this is the Fed that just keeps on surprising, so who knows. In the meantime, I'm willing to trade the ranges, and that may be all you get to do for a while.
Q: Target (TGT) shares are down 25%, as they cited higher costs that will result in rising prices for their customers. Would you buy the dip?
A: No, I generally don’t like retailers anyway. It’s a business that operates on a 2% profit margin. I like 40 or 50% profit margin businesses—those tend to be technology stocks.
Q: Would you buy retailers going into a recession?
A: No, that’s the worst thing in the world to own.
Q: Could Fluor Corp (FLR) be a Ukraine infrastructure stock?
A: Yes, once the war ends there will be a massive effort to rebuild Ukraine. Every company in the world will be involved, and Fluor and Bechtel will be the biggest, though Fluor is the only one where you can buy the stock. We already have the money to do this with all of the money that was seized from Russia. I predict discount sales on mega yachts.
Q: Why do you think all that money is going to Ukraine?
A: Because a weakened Russia is in the national interest of the United States, and it’s better that their soldiers are doing the dying than ours. I’ve done the latter and definitely prefer the former, using the other country's’soldiers as cannon fodder.
Q: On down days like today, should I be putting on one-month trades like the June options?
A: Yes, because the minimizes your risk and cuts the cost of mistakes. Waiting for the second half of the year when we get a prolonged uptrend to look at LEAPS—that is the correct way to do it.
Q: Over the next 12 months, do you think the S&P 500 will outperform Nasdaq?
A: No—for the next 3 months the S&P 500 will outperform NASDAQ. After that, NASDAQ will become an enormous outperformer for the rest of the decade. So, choose your entry points wisely.
Q: Do you think that housing is peaking out and will start to decline?
A: No, we still have a long-term structural shortage of 10 million homes in the US and I think we will flatline housing for years until we catch up with that shortfall.
Q: What are your thoughts on the Metaverse?
A: Too soon. Right now, the Metaverse involves spending only—no revenues. It could be years before you actually see any profits. So that’s why I'm avoiding Meta or Facebook (FB). But then, you could have made the same argument about the internet 25 years ago and semiconductors 50 years ago. If you waited long enough, however, you obviously made a fortune.
Q: China is hoarding 69% of their wheat reserves. Is this because they plan to invade Taiwan?
A: No, it’s because there’s a global food crisis going on. Many countries, like India, have banned exports of food to protect themselves. People miss this about China: China will never have a war or invade anybody, because the second they do, their food supplies get cut off by us, who are the world’s largest producer of food. Plus, their trade would get shut off to pay for it, so they can’t buy it from somewhere else, and that’s done with us also. So, they need to be in our good graces in order to eat. That's the bottom line and that’s why Taiwan will never get invaded. Russia’s economy can operate independently for a while, but China’s can’t.
Q: Is the baby food shortage further evidence of a food crisis?
A: No, the baby formula crisis is being caused by a monopoly of three companies that control 100% of the baby food market; and the largest of these companies, accounting for a 40% market share of the baby food making, is producing baby food that is poisonous. That's why they got shut down. This has been going on for years, and for some reason, they got a free pass on regulation and inspections by the previous administration, which is ending now, and all of a sudden we’re finding out that 40% of the country’s baby food is contaminated and is being pulled off the market. So, it really has nothing to do with the global food crisis. That’s more related to Climate change—surprise, surprise—as it’s not raining in the right places like California, the war in Ukraine, which removed 13% of the world’s calories practically overnight.
Q: Should I bet the farm here with the ARK Innovation Fund (ARKK)? I like Cathie Woods’ bet on innovation or five-year time horizon. It’s a great thing, don’t you think?
A: Not so great when you drop 70% in the last year. And it is a high-risk bet that of her ten largest holding companies, you only need one of them to work for the fund to bring in a decent return. Of course, you may have to write off nine other companies to do that. But yes, it’s a great thing to own on the way up, not so great on the way down. I know some people who started scaling into ARK in November and came to regret it. I would wait on it—this is your highest leverage technology play, and if you really want some punishment, there’s a hedge fund that’s bringing out a 2X long ARK fund in the next couple of months. Then it’s basically option money you’re throwing out. If you want to put some money in that, you could get a 10x on the 2x ETF if you’re playing a recovery in ARK. So watch it; don’t touch it now because ARK is having another heart attack today, but something to consider if you like gambling.
Q: I am full up with a thousand shares of PayPal (PYPL). It’s now down 76%. What should I do?
A: I recommend you learn the art of stop losses. I stopped out of this thing last fall, and it’s continued to go down virtually every day. Whenever you buy a new position, automatically enter into your spreadsheet your stop loss for that position. Because things can drop by 80 or 90% and you work too hard for your money to throw it away on these big losses.
Q: What do you think about Steve Wynn and Wynn Hotels?
A: I’d be buying down here down 62%; it was announced today that Steve Wynn has secretly been acting as an agent for the Chinese government where (WYNN) has a major part of its operations. Who knew? With all those high rollers being flown in on private jets from China, sitting at the tables in the closed rooms. So yes, this is a recovery play and it will do just as well as all other recovery plays, but remember it’s a China recovery play. And I think, in any case, his ex-wife owns a big part of the company anyway. So I don’t think Steve Wynn is that closely connected with Wynn hotels because of past transgressions with the female staff.
Q: Is it time to scale into Freeport-McMoRan (FCX)?
A: I’d say yes. On a longer-term view, I expect (FCX) to go to $100. And for those who have the May $32/$35 call spread that expires on Friday, my bet is that you get the max profit—but you may not sleep before then.
Q: What do you have to say about a post-Putin scenario and impact on the market?
A: The day Putin dies of a heart attack, you can count on the market being up 10%, if that happens right now—less if it happens at a later date. But it would be hugely bullish for the entire global stock market, and oil would also collapse, which is why I refuse to put on oil plays here. That is a risk. Putin can give up, have an accident, or get overthrown. When the Russian people see their standard of living decline by 90%, this is a country that has a long history of revolutions, putting their leaders in front of firing squads and throwing the bodies down wells. So, if I were Putin, I wouldn't be sleeping very well right now.
Q: What's the reason for air tickets (UAL), (ALK), (DAL) going up sharply?
A: 1. Shortage of airplanes 2. Soaring fuel costs 3. Labor shortages and strikes 4. It is all proof of an economy that is definitely NOT going into recession.
