All our China bets paid off. Copper went up, and the Shanghai stock market continued to go ballistic. The economic data flow pouring out of the Middle Kingdom has continued unremittingly positive. My only regret is that we didn?t have more of these. But when everything you have on is working, who?s to complain? This makes 8 consecutive closing profitable trades taking the Trade Alert Service performance to another all time high.
At these prices, we have reaped 96% of the potential profit, riding the spread from $2.54 to $2.98. It is not worth running it for two more weeks for the two last cents. Better to take profits here and roll the capital into another position.
The best execution can be had by placing your bid for the entire spread in the middle market and waiting for the market to come to you. The difference between the bid and the offer on these deep in-the-money spread trades can be enormous. Don?t execute the legs individually or you will end up losing much of your profit up front.
Keep in mind that these are ballpark prices only. Spread pricing can be very volatile on expiration months farther out.
Here are the specific trades you need to execute this profitable position:
Sell 40 X (FCX) February, 2013 $30 Calls at??????. $5.54
Buy to cover short 40 X (FCX) February, 2013 $33 calls at??...?.-$2.56
Net Proceeds????????????????.????. $2.98
Maximum profit at expiration = $2.98 - $2.52 = $0.46
($0.46 X 100 X 40) = $1,840, or 1.84% for the notional $100,000 model portfolio.
